Original description after AGASSIZ, 1843 [25]: Les variations de forme et de dimensions auxquelles ces dents sont soumises, suivant leur position dans la gueule de l’animal, en rendent la détermination fort difficile; aussi m’est-il arrivé de confondre plusieurs espèces sous cette dénomination, avant que je connusse d’une manière exacte les limites dans lesquelles elles peuvent varier; et aujourd’hui même, il me reste encore quelques doutes á l’égard de certains exemplaires. Ce sont des dents d’assez grande taille, allongées et en forme de lance. Les plus grandes sont ordinairement équilatérales ou à-peu-près (fig. 9, 10, 15 et 16), d’où nous concluons qu’elles occupaient le devant des mâchoires; d’autres plus ou moins arquées étaient sans doute placées plus en arrière (fig. 7). Une autre particularité plus importante, et qui sert surtout à les distinguer des grandes espèces d‘Otodus, lorsque la base de la couronne est endommagée, c’est leur faible épaisseur qui égale á peine la moitié de la largeur de la base de l’émail. La racine n’est jamais aussi gonflée que dans les Otodus (fig. 15a, 16a), et ses cornes sont surtout bien moins développées. La face interne est régulièrement bombée de la base au sommet, et sert ainsi á distinguer notre Oxyrh. hastalis de l‘Oxyrh. xiphodon qui présente de ce côté un aplatissement considérable. La base de l’émail est légèrement échancrée à la face externe; elle descend moins bas et est plus évasée á la face interne. La plupart des dents sont à-peu-près droites, et leur pointe seule est plus ou moins recourbée en dehors (fig. 8a, 9a, 10a, 11a, etc.). La face externe, quoique plate, présente plusieurs particularités dignes de remarque; et d’abord elle n’est que relativement plane, et lorsqu’on l’examine de près, on trouve de chaque côté un léger sillon vertical parallèle au bord qui s’étend jusqu’aux deux tiers ou aux trois quarts de la hauteur; le milieu est en revanche légèrement renflé avec une petite dépression au milieu, près de la base de l’émail. Ces détails sont en général trop peu apparens pour pouvoir être représentés d’une manière précise. Cependant on distingue fort bien ces sillons dans nos fig. 5, 8, 9, 10 et 11, et ils sont toujours très-sensibles au toucher. Pour rendre ces différences plus appréciables, j’ai représenté sur la Tab. 37 les coupes des trois espèces dans lesquelles elles sont de la plus grande importance. La coupe A est une dent de l’Oxyrh. hastalis, la coupe B une dent de l’Oxyrh. xiphodon, la coupe C une dent de l’Oxyrh. Desorii, et la coupe D une dent de l’Oxyrh. subinflata. D’après cette diagnostique, les dents de fig. 3-13 et 15-17 sont de véritables Oxyrh. hastalis. La fig. 14 au contraire appartient á l’Oxyrh. inflata, et les fig. 1 et 2 sont une troisième espèce que je désigne sous le nom de Oxyrh. leptodon. L‘Oxyrh. hastalis est évidemment une espèce tertiaire; la plupart des exemplaires figurés se trouvent au Musée de Stuttgart, et proviennent, selon toute apparence, de la molasse de Würtemberg. M. Kaup m’en a également communiqué de fort beaux, provenant des dépôts tertiaires de la vallée du Rhin. On en trouve aussi dans plusieurs collections de Suisse, provenant de la molasse, en particulier dans la collection de M. Thurmann et dans celle du Musée de Zürich. M. le comte de Münster en possède de fort belles, provenant du terrain tertiaire de Kressenberg; je n’ai remarqué aucune différence sensible entre les dents de ces deux localités.
