Short Description
Disk without spines, except near edge of pectoral fins in males. Ventral mucous pores not blackish. Tail with middorsal row of large spines. Snout pointed [17658]. Upper surface pale brown or bluish gray without dark markings. Lower surface white with small sooty blotches irregularly distributed around margins of pectorals, pelvic fins white below. Lower surface of tail white but pale brown rearward [199]. Diet: Barents Sea (data base: of 14 stomachs examined) Spinytail skate stomach contents were dominated by fish (90% by mass), which included haddock, redfish and long rough dab. One of the stomachs contained a round skate of 26 cm TL. [5910];

Distribution
Western Atlantic: Greenland side of Davis Strait and off the east coast of Newfoundland, Canada to off Georges Bank. Eastern Atlantic: Barents Sea, Norway, Iceland-Faroes-Shetland Rise and eastern Greenland [7182]. Source: www.gbif.org

fisheries: of no interest

Biology
Oviparous [7182]. Paired eggs are laid. Embryos feed solely on yolk [733]. Distinct pairing with embrace. Young may tend to follow large objects, such as their mother [17086]. An inhabitant of deep, cold water [17658]. Feeds on Mallotus villosus (capelin) and Raja radiata (thorny skate) (Ref. 5951).
