Odontaspis ferox (RISSO, 1810)
Description after BASS et al. 1975 (for Odontaspis herbsti, a synonym of Odontaspis ferox) [#133]:
The distinctive multicuspid teeth of a 110 cm immature female 0. herbsti from Natal are shown in pl. 2. Tooth counts of two of our specimens were:
20-3-2-1 - 1-2-4-20 and 19-4-2-1 - 1-2-4-19
18-2-1 - 1-2-18 and 19-2-1 - 1-2-18
These counts are virtually identical to that given by Garrick (1974) for a specimen from New Zealand, while overall counts do not differ significantly from those given for Australian, eastern Pacific and Madeiran specimens (Whitley 1950, Daugherty 1964, Maul 1955). Abe et al. (1968) report that tooth counts of Japanese O. herbsti are similar to those taken from other localities.
