Short Description
Original diagnose after DA SILVA & LOBODA, 2019 [27284]: Potamotrygon marquesi is a new species from northern South America distinguished from congeners by the following combination of characters: dorsal disc background usually beige with grey tonalities, but also light to dark brown mixed with shades of grey and having open and closed bicolor rings; these rings in grey or beige internally and externally surrounded by a dark grey band; disc bearing large and nearly star-shaped denticles with wide and flat central coronal plates (ccp) connected to five or six lateral coronal ridges (lcr) by shallow crown ridges (crr); tail dorsum with a single row of pointed spines, from its base to caudal barb insertion; lateral row of small spines starting at level of posterior half of tail and extending to caudal barb insertion.

Dentition
Teeth set in quincunx; tooth rows varying 28–39 on upper jaw and 26–38 on lower jaw. Teeth in symphysis 2–4 on upper jaw and 2–3 on lower jaw. Upper and lower jaws with monognathic heterodonty. Sexual dimorphism present: central tooth rows cuspidate in males, with cusps of lower jaw more developed than cusps of upper jaw; females without cusps. Heterodonty restricted to adult specimens and similar in both sexes: upper jaw intermediate tooth rows slightly larger than teeth in central and lateral rows and lower jaw central tooth rows larger than lateral rows. Subadult and juvenile specimens devoid of heterodonty [27284]
