Description
Original diagnosis after Gess & Burrow, 2024 [32704]: Pectoral spines dorsoventrally flattened, max. depth to length ratio ca. 1:6, insertion length approximately 45% of total length, with ornament ridges oblique over most of the spine and becoming parallel to the trailing edge distally, ridges and grooves of equal width, ca. 18 ridges on each side at mid-spine, arrowhead-shaped nodose ornament on ridges, ca. 11 nodes per cm; pelvic spines with insertion area extending the length of the spine, subparallel ornament ridges angled at 60° to the leading edge at mid-spine level, with groove separating ridges slightly wider than the ridges, ca. 6 nodes per cm; median (?anal) spines laterally flattened, longitudinally curved with a sharp apex, spine length almost twice base length, with insertion ca. one-third the length of the spine along trailing edge, ridges more or less parallel trailing edge, ca. 11 nodes per cm on ridges. Scapulocoracoid simple triangular shape lacking an apical knob. Gy. riniensis differs from Gy. murrayi and Gy. warreni in having ridge ornament of arrowhead-shaped rather than stellate nodes/tubercles, and differs from “Gyracanthus” sherwoodi in ridge ornament and maximum depth:length ratio of pectoral spines. Gy. riniensis differs from all other gyracanthids in having a large, long-based median fin spine ca. 40% the length of the pectoral spine, and in its ridge ornament.
