Original diagnosis after Grogan & Lund, 2000 [3203]: Genus distinguished from the other family member, Heteropetalus elegantulus, by a postorbital region comprising 15–25% of the neurocranium, an antorbitally positioned quadratomandibular articulation, anteriorly elongate ventral hyoid and branchial elements, dorsal fin squammation restricted to radials, pectoral basals dominated by metapterygium, and a long, mobile anterior dorsal spine. Dentition restricted to anterior one-third of mandible and corresponding portion of palatoquadrate
