Description
Original diagnosis after Cappetta, Morrison & Adnet, 2019 [27810]: This Chlamydoselachus species is characterised by a tooth morphology very close to that of the extant species C. anguineus, i.e. a crown consisting of three cusps strongly bent lingually in profile view. In labial view, the median cusp is straight and vertical, and the marginal cusps are shorter, diverging and sigmoid, making a crown with a lyre-shaped design. A narrow bulge marking the base of the median cusp overhangs the root. An intermediate cusplet, erect and sharp, occurs on each side between the median and the marginal cusps. There are no marginal cusplets. In profile view, the apex of the median cusp exceeds the lingual extremity of the root.
The root is much longer than broad and triangular in form. In profile view, its lingual face is regularly convex and its basal face concave. Its basal face shows a narrow median notch separating lingually two sharp lobes and prolonged labially by a median crest. Each lobe bears labially a triangular hollow.
The teeth of C. balli differ from those of C. lawleyi or of C. anguineus in that their cusps are more acutely angled lingually, have less twisted lateral cusps and a thinner root in profile view. However, because the variations noted in the extant C. anguineus (Welton 1979; Pfeil 1983; Adnet 2006), those differences must be used carefully and cannot be decisive.
