Short Description
Snout very long and pointed; length before eyes 2,5-4,0 times distance between them; disc broadly rhombic with acute outer corners; upper surface and underside smooth in young, partly prickly in larger specimens; no thorns on disc, a row of 12-18 thorns along tail; 40-56 tooth rows; upper surface olive-grey or brown with a variable pattern of light spots, underside ashy-grey to blue-grey [7182]. Diet: Barents Sea (data base: of 39 stomachs examined): Blue skate stomach contents consisted largely of fish (~70% by mass), with young cod and haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus), redfish and long rough dab (Hippoglossoides platessoides limandoides) prevalent. One of the stomachs contained a young round skate of 17 cm TL. Fisheries waste was another important food source (25% by mass). [5910];

Biology
Oviparous, paired eggs are laid. Embryos feed solely on yolk [733]. Egg-cases laid in spring and summer, very large [7182]. Distinct pairing with embrace. Young may tend to follow large objects, such as their mother [17086]. Eggs have horn-like projections on the shell [17086].
