Short Description
Original description af Chen, 1963 [453]: Head 4% in length to origin of upper caudal lobe; greatest disk width 1%, snout 5% in head to last g ill opening; mouth width 1 4/7; interorbital 1%. Head broad, depressed, width somewhat greater than its length. Snout and interorbital as seen above flattened, with slight median depression. Eye small, about once its diameter distant from profile of head, 1/4 of interorbital. Spiracle slightly larger than eye, 3/10 of interorbital. Gill opening lateral, large and close together before pectoral. Mouth wide, slightly arched, with double folds in front of each angle of lower jaw. Tongue triangular, pointed in front. Nostrils terminal, separated from mouth by deep furrow. Inner nasal barbel spatulate, ramose at tip, its inner basal portion with fringed expansion. Outer nasal barbel narrow. Margin of nostril between barbels deeply fringed.
Teeth strong. awl-shaped, slightly curved and directed inward toward throat, three functional series in each jaw.
Group of spiniform tubercles on rostral ridges, one in antero-superior angle of orbit and another one between postero-superior margin of orbit and spiracle. Whole upper surface of body covered with minute tricarinate denticles, quite rough to touch. No middorsal series of enlarged spines. Outer margins of all fins smooth. Under surface of disk smooth, except some very fine close-set asperities on outer front edge of pectoral and outer angle of ventral. Under surface of tail closely covered with imbricate denticles not extended to its base.
Dorsal small, subequal, first dorsal origin nearer bases of ventrals than origin of ca11clal, its length of anterior margin 2 2/3 in head, second dorsal origin between origin of first dorsal and that of caudal, its length of anterior margin 2 6/. Pectoral with outer corner more obtuse than right angle. its length of anterior outer margin 2 7/9 in length to subcaudal origin; posterior outer margin (distal margin) 1 4/5 in its length. Ventral about 1 1/10 times as Jong at base as pectoral, its distal margin straight, about 3/8 as long as that of pectoral, their free inner corners tapering with acute tip and reaching little anterior to origin of 1st dorsal. Candal triangular, its posterior contour concave, its lower Jobe longer than upper. its length of lower anterior margin about % of total length. Caudal peduncle flattened dorso-ventrally, with faintly defined longitudinal ridge along each side.
Light yellowish brown, closely covered with small, round white spots. Borders of fins whitish. Base of dorsals blackish. 3 pairs of ocellated black spots larger than eye, two on each pectoral at anterior and posterior angle, one on each side near base of tail.
Another 3 pairs of ill-defined darker blotches, one on anterior portion of ventral base, one on posterior angle of ventral, one on posterior angle of pectoral before large spot mentioned above.
