Alopias vulpinus (BONNATERRE, 1788)
Description after BASS et al. 1976: [#133]:
TEETH: The teeth of a 376cm female are shown in pl. 11 . The tooth count of this shark was 21 - 2 - 20/24 - 2 - 22 somewhat higher than that of 20 - 20/21 - 21 for a western Atlantic specimen (Bigelow and Schroeder 1948). Our shark had definite small central teeth in both upper and lower jaws, a character which was absent in Bigelow and Schroeder's specimens. Gubanov (1972) gives the range of tooth counts in 22 A. vulpinus from the north-west Indian Ocean as 19 to 26 - 19 to 26/21 to 27 - 21 to 3o.
