Shark reference custom search tool and maintenance

Update to Phase 1!

In the meantime, our programmer has been able to programme a version of the necessary software so that our pdf's can be read and the text imported into the database. The first attempts are promising. In the meantime, the text of around 10000 articles has been imported into the database. We expect to be able to complete this process by the end of the year. Then, in a second step, the search function at shark-references will be expanded.

Our sincere thanks to all donors!!!

Fins up,

Jürgen & Nico

Since we were asked several times, if we could help distributing chondrichthyan-related job opportunities, we would like to try this out as a new category in the newsletter besides postings on our Facebook page. This category definitely depends on the community sharing job openings, so please do not hesitate and send us vacancies or similar.
Right now, we have four interesting job openings. We will keep it simple and just crosslink:

INTERNATIONAL BASKING SHARK CONFERENCE | 2025

There has been increasing global interest in basking shark distribution, population status, and sightings trends in recent decades, coinciding with new technologies and methods for monitoring highly mobile marine species. Additionally, there is growing consensus that international coordination is required to manage and conserve this endangered species. The IBSG and the National Parks and Wildlife Service therefore plan to organise and host an International Basking Shark Conference in Galway, Ireland from May 9 - 11, 2025, to coincide with the basking shark season here. The goals of this conference are interdisciplinary:

            1) to create a global discussion of ongoing research
            2) to encourage international collaboration and data sharing
            3) to highlight the unique cultural history of the species.

To this end, while we will prioritize the attendance of researchers, the conference will be accessible to non-scientists as well.

New book!
The present book introduces the reader to the chondrichthyan fossil record of the Carpathian-Pannonian Region, with emphasizing the most important informations about the evolution and biology of extinct and extant cartilaginous fishes. The book is bilingual (Hungarian/ English), the content extends on 255 pages with 138 figures (of them 5 are paleoarts by the author).
A few teasers from the content:
- Galeocerdo aduncus and Galeocerdo cuvier coexisted in the Central Paratethys during the Middle Miocene
- Apart from Carcharhinus priscus, at least two further species of Carcharhinus (C. cf. similis and C. cf. dudoni) inhabited the Central Paratethys during the Miocene
- The book introduces the first data of various fossil chondrichthyan taxa from the Carpathian-Pannonian Region or from the whole of Europe, i.e. Omanoselache halli, Omanoselache bucheri, Ginglymostoma sp., Isurolamna affinis, Megalolamna paradoxodon, Moerigaleus vitreodon and Safrodus tozieri
- Historical specimens of Antal Koch, Jozef Vincent-Hugolín Lunácek, Wilhelm Weiler and István Vitális were re-figured
- The type material of Hybodus laczkói, Palaeobatis balatonicus, Carcharias divergens, Myliobatis miocenicus and Myliobatis superbus were re-described and re-investigated
- The book also re-investigates and re-figures the Rajidae egg-case from early Oligocene of Eger (Hungary)
- Based on SEM investigations, the extinct species Iago angustidens might have been a more pelagic than deep water shark
- Teeth of juvenile Otodus megalodon unearthed from two Middle Miocene locations might refer to a hidden shark nursery in the region

An updated checklist of fishes of Dongsha Island, Taiwan, northern South China Sea
https://zookeys.pensoft.net/article/131100/list/9/
ABSTRACT
Dongsha Island, situated in the northern part of the South China Sea, is surrounded by coral reefs and deep-sea habitats. The coastal areas of the atoll, a marine protected area, serve as important nursery habitats for many reef fish species. At the same time, the offshore deep-sea continental slopes are historically important fishing grounds. Although previous inventories primarily focused on coral reef fishes within the atoll listing 652 species from 73 families, comprehensive surveys of fishes from deeper waters have been incomplete. In this study, the species composition of the fish fauna around Dongsha was updated by analyzing large volumes of frozen bycatch from commercial deep-sea trawlers operating in the area for the past four years and reviewing the existing literature. The species list increased to 1087 species belonging to 167 families, including several documented as new records and potentially undescribed species. This updated checklist also includes images of each species and most of their sagittal otoliths. This will assist further taxonomic work and significantly enhance understanding of marine biodiversity in the South China Sea.

First records of Alopias superciliosus (Laminiformes: Alopidae) in Namibian waters
ABSTRACT:
The bigeye thresher shark, Alopias superciliosus, is confirmed for the first time in Namibian waters, from four specimens caught as bycatch of bottom trawlers fishing for hake. One specimen was released alive; the other three were dead when brought on board and were utilised by crew members. This species has not previously been documented in Namibia and these records complete the gap in the species’ range, between Angola and South Africa.

Journal of Parasitology, 110(5), 521–533
New species: Acanthobothrium oceguerai
Abstract: Spiral valves from specimens of the giant electric ray Narcine entemedor Jordan & Starks, 1895 were examined in search of tapeworms at 2 localities of the Mexican tropical Pacific Ocean. Acanthobothrium oceguerai n. sp. is described herein based on material from Ventanilla, Oaxaca and from Acapulco Bay, Guerrero. The new species is a category 6 species, distinguished by being apolytic, retaining proglottids on the strobila until they are gravid, having strobila of 166–322 proglottids, having a small scolex and very long bothridia relative to the scolex, and having abaxial prongs that are short and thin in comparison to the axial prongs, which are longer and more robust. Acanthobothrium oceguerai n. sp. can be differentiated from other members of category 6 by the hooks, which are shorter, more robust, and smaller than those of the other members of this category. The phylogenetic analysis based on the 28S rRNA locus placed Acanthobothrium oceguerai n. sp. as sister to an unidentified species of larval Acanthobothrium from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In addition, sequences of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I gene and nuclear 18S rDNA were generated to provide support for future taxon sampling. Acanthobothrium oceguerai n. sp. is the fifth species of cestode reported from Nentemedor in the tropical eastern Pacific.

(Trypanorhyncha Diesing, 1863) from Mobula thurstoni (Lloyd, 1908), including the description of two new species from Bali, Indonesia. Zoomorphology, 144(1), Article 3
New genus: Archaenybelina
New species: Archaenybelina mimicricestus, Archaenybelina pseudotetrabothrialis
Abstract: Two specimens of Mobula thurstoni (Lloyd, 1908) were obtained from fishermen of Karangasem, Indonesia, and studied for trypanorhynch cestodes. Archaenybelina gen. nov., including two new species A. pseudotetrabothrialis sp. nov. and A. mimicricestus sp. nov., were recorded from the stomach and spiral valve and analysed for details of scolex and segment morphology, and surface ultrastructure. The new genus is characterized by 4 asymmetrical bothria separated by deep posterior notches, the presence of tegumental grooves, a homeoacanthous heteromorphous armature and a unique segment morphology. Both species can be separated by different hook sizes, basal hook rows and distribution of bothrial microtriches. Scolex surface ultrastructure shows hamulate spinitriches on bothria, lineate spinitriches along bothrial margins, and papilliform filitriches on the scolex peduncle. Similar microtriches have been reported from the bothrial margins of the Tentaculariidae. Tegumental grooves with a probably secretory function based on histology are present on the posterior bothrial margin. A collar of uncinate microtriches appear at the outer surface, separated from an internal bulbous structure, clearly distinguish this organ from the ciliated pits of the Otobothriidae. Based on four bothria, appearing not entirely separated at the anterior part of the scolex that indicates an originally bifossate state, a homeoacanthous heteromorphous armature, tegumental grooves, the absence of prebulbar organs and the presence of muscular rings, we assign the new genus into the Paranybeliniidae Schmidt, 1970. Describing first details of the segment morphology add to the family diagnosis in the most recent classification. The unique morphology of the new genus including its potential life cycle that involves oceanic devil rays as final and euphausiid crustaceans as second intermediate hosts are discussed.

New species: Acanthobothrium oceguerai
Abstract: During a parasitological survey of tapeworms from Myliobatis goodei Garman, 1885 (Myliobatiformes: Myliobatidae) in coastal waters off Argentina in the Southwestern Atlantic, a new rhinebothriidean cestode species, Anindobothrium danielae sp. nov., is described using morphological and molecular techniques. This species differs from its congeners by a particular combination of features, including the configuration of the bothridia, the number of marginal loculi, and the number and distribution of testes. Additionally, Anindobothrium myliobatidis comb. nov. is proposed based on several morphological traits, including the presence of stalked bothridia with marginal loculi and an apical sucker, euapolytic strobila, and postvaginal testes. The diagnosis of the genus Anindobothrium Marques, Brooks & Lasso, 2001 is amended to include the features exhibited by these two species; two species subsets are suggested based on the configuration of the bothridia. The presence of A. danielae sp. nov. and A. myliobatidis comb. nov. in the studied area not only increases the number of cestodes in M. goodei here from eight to ten but also represents the first report of a rhinebothriidean cestode parasitizing stingrays of the family Myliobatidae in the Southwestern Atlantic.

Overfishing has halved shark and ray populations since 1970

Date: December 12, 2024
Source: Simon Fraser University
Summary: A new analysis reveals that overfishing has caused populations of chondrichthyan fishes -- sharks, rays, and chimaeras -- to decline by more than 50 per cent since 1970. To determine the consequences, a team of researchers developed an aquatic Red List Index (RLI) which shows that the risk of extinction for chondrichthyan has increased by 19 per cent. The study also highlights that the overfishing of the largest species in nearshore and pelagic habitats could eliminate up to 22 per cent of ecological functions. Chondrichthyans are an ancient and ecologically diverse group of over 1,199 fishes that are increasingly threatened by human activities. Overexploitation by target fisheries and incidental capture (bycatch), compounded by habitat degradation, climate change and pollution, has resulted in over one-third of chondrichthyans facing extinction.
