Abstract

Echinorhiniformes and Echinorhinidae are a distinct order and family of sharks comprising two species showing several outstanding morphological characteristics, such as their tooth morphologies. Their teeth display unique shapes among sharks with main and secondary cusps which also allow tracking the fossil record of Echinorhinidae. In this study, we review the dental morphological characters of Echinorhinus spp. and further analyse intraspecific morphological variation in a population tentatively identified as E. cf. brucus from the Indian Ocean. Previously suggested hypotheses of intra- and interspecific morphological variations are critically tested, i.e., we examine ontogenetic changes in dental morphologies in E. cf. brucus and test for species-specific differences of dental morphologies between E. brucus, E. cf. brucus, and E. cookei. Results show that within and between species dental variation is limited. Neither tooth size nor cusp angle are jaw position specific. An ontogenetic change in cusplet numbers is detected. Species-specific dental morphological differences within the examined specimens of Echinorhinus were not found; however, the overall tooth formula may be a useful character for species identification. Further, our tooth measurements are useful for estimating the average total length of specimens, which, in combination with the detected ontogenetic change in cusplet numbers, we suggest using for the characterization of the fossil record of Echinorhinus.

Otodus megalodon vertebrae from Denmark

Rediscovery of the associated gigantic vertebrae of the extinct megatooth shark, Otodus megalodon, from the Upper Miocene Gram Formation in Denmark, and comments on its paleobiological significance and the maximum possible size of the species

ABSTRACT

The extinct megatooth shark, Otodus megalodon, is an iconic Neogene shark that may have reached as much as 24.3 m in total length (TL). The 24.3 m TL estimate was partly based on published photographs of an associated set of vertebrae from the Upper Miocene Gram Formation in Gram, Denmark, some of which allegedly had a diameter of 23 cm. Here, we report on the rediscovery of the specimen, which was thought to be lost, confirming the reported maximum diameter of 23 cm. Those vertebrae co-occurred with remains of a cetorhinid (basking shark), but the morphology and size assessments of the vertebrae suggest that they belong to O. megalodon, with the possibility that the cetorhinid remains represent stomach content of the megatooth shark. The vertebral specimen of O. megalodon was also used to decipher its ontogenetic growth patterns, and this study suggests that this specific individual had the potential to grow even slightly larger than 24.3 m. However, the growth model presented in this work must be viewed as highly tentative. Nevertheless, the O. megalodon specimen described herein is significant because it represents the largest shark vertebral specimen known to date, and quite possibly even the largest non-tetrapod vertebrae ever recorded. Ultimately, a more complete skeletal specimen of O. megalodon, ideally with associated teeth, is required for any further discussion on the maximum possible size of the fossil species.

NEW SPECIES DESCRIBED!

A new species of Rhinochimaera is described based on a unique combination of morphological traits, further supported by molecular evidence. The type series comprises three males (775–830 mm total length) collected off the Pacific coast of Costa Rica between 2000 and 2023, at depths of 390–787 m. A total of 49 morphometric measurements were obtained from the three specimens and compared with published and unpublished data from 90 additional specimens representing the three currently recognized species of Rhinochimaera.

New species: Potamotrygon siponinmorok
Abstract: A new species of freshwater stingray (Potamotrygoninae) is described from the Demerara River, Guyana and río Guanare, Venezuela. It is distinguished from all other regional congeneric taxa (i.e., Potamotrygon marinae, P. schroederi, P. orbignyi, P. motoro,and P. boesemani) by a combination of meristic, morphometric, and molecular evidence. Unlike P. motoro and P. boesemani, which exhibit distinct dorsal ocelli, and P. schroederi, which has numerous tan, yellow or orange rosettes on a dark background coloration, the new species Potamotrygon siponinmorok, does not have pigment organised in spots, exhibiting reticulated patterns more similar to P. marinae and P. orbignyi.However, the new speciesdiffers from these similarly patterned species (i.e., P. marinae and P. orbignyi) by having a longer tail, fewer teeth, differently shaped teeth, and contrasting lateral line morphology. Molecular analysis corroborates P. siponinmorok, as a distinct lineage within the Potamotrygon clade, and its close relationship with P. marinae from the Eastern Guianas, P. orbignyi from the Orinoco, and P. schroederi from the rio Negro. This species description highlights the importance of thorough, complementary and integrative taxonomy studies for groups with pronounced morphological variability and levels of endemism, especially from areas under threat of habitat degradation.

New species: Paratrygon lucindai, Paratrygon araguaia, Paratrygon munduruku, Paratrygon raonii
Abstract: The second most diverse genus of the Potamotrygonidae, Paratrygon, with three previously recognized species, P. aiereba, P. orinocensis and P. parvaspina, is here expanded, with the description of four new species, each endemic to one of the four largest clear water rivers in the Amazon basin: Tapajós, Xingu, Araguaia and Tocantins. The new taxa occur in the middle and upper portions of their respective rivers, which originate and flow from the Brazilian Crystalline Shield. They are recognized by morphological characters such as coloration, dentition, morphometrics, morphology and distribution of dermal denticles and caudal spines, distribution of ventral canals of the lateral line system, and morphology and structure of major skeletal elements. Previously published molecular studies also confirm the validity of these species, and their data have been considered in the discussion. The description of these four new species and the reconfiguration of the distribution of P. aiereba in the Amazon basin led to a discussion of the possible influence of the water types of the Amazonian rivers on the diversity found in the genus. The hypothesis regarding this type of influence in potamotryginins was recently proposed by other authors. A key to identification of the species of Paratrygon is provided.

Abstract: This article provides a description of a new species of a catshark of the family Pentanchidae, Apristurus drona sp. nov. based on 4 specimens, which include two males and two females ranging from 439–473 mm TL, collected off the Kollam slope, Southwest coast of India, at a depth of 400–650 m. This new species is placed in the Apristurus brunneus subgroup among the three groups divided within the genus Apristurus and is characterized by the following features: slender body, tapering posteriorly; nostril length is smaller than internarial width; pre-outer nostril length shorter than interorbital space; pre-outer nostril length 3.7(3.5–5.2) % TL; pre-oral length shorter than the mouth width, 33.6(31.7–34.0)% head length and 8.1(7.1–8.1)% TL; nostril-mouth space shorter than nostril length, about 0.4 (0.3–0.4) times; upper labial furrows longer than the lowers furrows; internarial width slightly greater than or equal to orbit length, about 1.09(1.0–1.11) times; 5th gill slit height smallest, about 46.8(46.8–62.5)% eye length; Inter-dorsal space 9.3(8.8–10.5) % TL; first dorsal fin smaller than the second dorsal fin; first dorsal fin insertion is opposite to anal fin origin; anal fin base length is greater than pectoral-pelvic space and pelvic-anal space; pectoral to pelvic space greater than pelvic to anal space; spiral valve turns 11–12; total vertebrae 105–115. Apristurus drona sp. nov. is also distinguished from its congeners based on DNA sequence divergence of the COI gene. This new species has a distribution along the Kollam slope, Arabian Sea, whereas its three closest congeners, based on a molecular level, are from distant locations: A. nayakai from Southwestern Pacific Ocean, A. macrorhynchus from Northwest Pacific and A. exsanguis from New Zealand.

A total of 49 morphometric measurements were obtained from the three specimens and compared with published and unpublished data from 90 additional specimens representing the three currently recognized species of Rhinochimaera. Rhinochimaera costaricana sp. nov. is distinguished from its congeners by a shorter snout, a larger and taller first dorsal-fin spine, a higher first dorsal fin, a wider interdorsal space, and a reduced number of caudal tubercles. Molecular analyses of COI sequences from two specimens of R. costaricana sp. nov. revealed genetic divergences of 3.9% from R. africana, 4.5% from R. atlantica, and 4.7% from R. pacifica, exceeding the commonly accepted interspecific divergence threshold. Species delimitation methods (ASAP, bPTP, GMYC) likewise support the recognition of this taxon as distinct from all congeners. This discovery improves our knowledge of deep-sea fish diversity in the region and underscores the importance of integrative approaches in species identification, delimitation, and characterization

Abstract: Walking sharks (Hemiscyllium) comprise 9 morphologically similar species whose identification relies on distinctive color patterns, genetic markers, and geographically restricted distributions. The genus is endemic to Australia and the island of New Guinea, a region that coincides with the global hotspot for carpet shark diversity (Orectolobiformes) that has been shaped by complex tectonic and sea‑level histories. Although knowledge of walking shark distributions has been updated over the past two decades, the species endemic to eastern Papua New Guinea remain poorly known. This study addresses these gaps by investigating the distributions of walking sharks in eastern Papua New Guinea. We used a series of in-situ surveys to review the ranges of walking shark species and to document their species-specific color patterns, complemented by an assessment of genetic markers to confirm the updated geographical distributions across species and explore phylogeographic patterns in the region. We present updated distributions for two species (H. michaeli and H. hallstromi)¸ as well as a theory for the development of a mosaic of disjunct, non-overlapping distributions previously unreported for the genus. Additionally, we describe a tenth member of the genus, Hemiscyllium dudgeonae, n. sp., which is likely to be highly threatened. We present possible mechanisms that may have produced this mosaic of distributions and influenced speciation in the region. Finally, we discuss the conservation implications of these findings.

New species: Echinochimaera curva
Abstract: The Viséan (Middle Mississippian) St. Louis Formation of the Illinois Basin of North America has yielded many ichthyodorulites (fish spines), few of which are known from articulated or associated remains. Five ichthyodorulites from a single bed in the St. Louis Formation of Putnam County, Indiana, USA are described—Spine 1: a fin spine resembling that of Echinochimaera meltoni Lund, 1977, provisionally referred to Echinochimaera and designated as Echinochimaera curva sp. nov., Spine 2: a curved, tapered spine having a flat proximal attachment area, Spine 3: a narrow, sharply-pointed, curved spine bearing distally-pointed denticles on both the concave and convex margins, Spine 4: a falciform dermal denticle, and Spine 5: an incomplete, tapered spine bearing three narrow prongs arranged slightly asymmetrically at the wider end. Other than the probable echinochimaerid fin spine, the affinities of these ichthyodorulites are obscure. Spine 2 might have menaspid affinities. Alternatively, it might be a fin spine similar to Physonemus. Spine 3 has characters in common with some menaspiform cephalic spines but might be a cephalic tenaculum (frontal clasper). Spine 4 resembles some traquairiid cephalic spines. Spine 5 might be an incomplete holocephalan frontal clasper. If Spine 1 does belong to an echinochimaerid, it would be the earliest known.

New species: Galeorhinus semiserratus

Abstract:

The Tupelo Bay Formation is an Eocene carbonate unit occurring in the outer Atlantic Coastal Plain of South Carolina, USA. This formation has yielded a rather diverse assemblage of late Eocene fishes that is dominated by sharks (squalomorph and galeomorph) but contains a lesser number of batoid and teleost fishes. Of the six orders of sharks represented, Carcharhiniformes is the most diverse, with teeth of 12 taxa identified, including Pachyscyllium sp., Premontreia (Oxyscyllium) gilberti, Hemipristis curvatus, Pseudabdounia claibornensis, Abdounia enniskilleni, A. minutissima, Carcharhinus sp., Negaprion gilmorei, Physogaleus aff contortus, P. aff. secundus, Galeocerdo clarkensis, and a new species, Galeorhinus semiserratus. Lamniformes are less diverse and represented by Otodus (Carcharocles) sokolowi?, Anomotodon novus, Striatolamia macrota, Brachycarcharias twiggsensis, Carchariidae indet., Macrorhizodus praecursor, Isurolamna inflata, and Alopias cf. alabamensis. Other, less diverse, orders nclude Hexanchiformes (Hexanchus agassizi), Squatiniformes (Squatina sp.), Heterodontiformes (Heterodontus vincenti), and Orectolobiformes (Nebrius thielensi, Eostegostoma angustum, Ginglymostomatidae indet.). Five batoids are represented by isolated teeth and rostral spines, including Pristis sp., Propristis schweinfurthi, “Aetomyleaeus” sp., “Myliobatis” sp., and “Rhinoptera” sp. Eleven bony fish taxa, Egertonia isodonta, Albula oweni, Sphyraena sp., Xiphiorhynchus sp., Trichiurides sagittidens, Scomberomorus sp., Sphyraenodus sp., Ostraciidae indet., Lobodus pedemontanus, Progymnodon hilgendorfi, and Cylindracanthus rectus, were identified based on teeth, jaws, and dermal armor. Teeth of E. angustum, I. inflata, Sphyraenodus sp., and L. pedemontanus represent rare records of these taxa in North America. The apparently depauperate batoid and teleost components of the assemblage may reflect taphonomic processes and/or a collecting bias towards larger specimens. Nonetheless, this assemblage increases our knowledge of the paleoenvironmental and paleobiogeographic distributions of the species represented.

Abstract

 

The cestode order Lecanicephalidea predominately parasitizes batoid fishes. The genus Hexacanalis (family Lecanicephalidae) is defined by the presence of six osmoregulatory canals and an antero-posteriorly U-shaped ovary. This genus currently includes three recognized species distributed across the Indian Ocean and the western Pacific Ocean. Until now, no records have documented its occurrence in the Persian Gulf or the Gulf of Oman. In this study, specimens of Hexacanalis were collected and examined for the first time from the genus Gymnura in both the Gulf of Oman and the Persian Gulf. Based on morphological characteristics, two new species of this genus are described. Hexacanalis mariae n. sp., collected from the Gulf of Oman, is distinguished from H. abruptus by several features, including the distribution pattern of vitelline follicles, an armed cirrus covered with microtriches, and a ventral position of the vagina relative to the cirrus sac. It also differs from H. folifer by the reduced extent of the velum in its craspedote proglottids and from H. pteroplateae by lacking gravid proglottids and by the position of the vagina. Hexacanalis arshai n. sp., identified from the Persian Gulf, closely resembles H. folifer in strobilar appearance but differs in having proglottids with a uterus containing eggs and in overall body length. Given the high host specificity of lecanicephalideans, the occurrence of two distinct Hexacanalis species-one in the Persian Gulf, from hosts for which molecular identification was not possible and considered here as G. cf. poecilura, and another in the Gulf of Oman parasitizing butterfly rays identified molecularly as Gymnura cf. poecilura 2-may indicate the presence of sibling species within the G. poecilura species complex in the northwestern Indian Ocean. This possibility is discussed in detail herein.

Abstract

The genus Rhinoptera is distributed throughout the tropical, subtropical and temperate waters of the Atlantic Ocean, exhibits pelagic coastal habits, and is common in coastal and estuarine areas. The state of Maranh & atilde;o, located on the Brazilian Amazon Coast, presents highly productive fishing resources, comprising a source of food and livelihood for most of the coastal and riverside population. This study was carried out at the Raposa municipality fishing landing port, where obtained 22 Rhinoptera brasiliensis specimens over a two-year monitoring period (2022-2024). Concerning sexual maturity, eight individuals were juveniles (36.30%), nine were adults (40.90%) and five were embryos (22.70%). The occurrence of yet another threatened species highlights the ecological importance in the ISRA Reeentr & acirc;ncias Maranhenses as a critical habitat for coastal elasmobranch species, mainly due to their overexploitation resulting from fishing activities.

Abstract

In addition to redescriptions of Neoalbionella etmopteri (Yamaguti, 1939), N. longicaudata (Hansen, 1923) and Pseudocharopinus markewitschi (Gusev, 1951), the new species Neoalbionella centrophoris sp. nov., N. deaniae sp. nov., N. futokarasuzame sp. nov., N. genrokuzame sp. nov., N. hydrolagi sp. nov., and N. scymnodoni sp. nov. are described. All these species were found as parasites on Chondrichthyes in the seas around Japan.

New species: Collicocephalus saminae
Abstract

Collicocephalus saminae n. sp. (Cestoda: Lecanicephalidea) is described from the spiral intestine of the eagle ray Aetomylaeus wafickii Jabado, Ebert & Al Dhaheri in the Persian Gulf. The lecanicephalidean genus Collicocephalus Koch, Jensen & Caira, 2012 was previously known only from its type species, Collicocephalus baggioi Koch, Jensen & Caira, 2012, described from Aetomylaeus vespertilio (Bleeker) in the Gulf of Carpentaria, Australia. In contrast to C. baggioi, which exhibits its greatest width at the scolex, the new species reaches its greatest width at the mature proglottid. The two species also differ in cirrus sac size, in the position of the external seminal vesicle, and in microtriches on the distal surface of the acetabula. Among the three species delineated from the former A. nichofii complex, Collicocephalus has been recorded only in A. wafickii. The use of cestodes with high host specificity is further discussed as a tool for validating the delimitation of eagle ray species within this complex.

New species: Amiculucestus bonasus
Abstract:

This study describes, on morphological and molecular grounds, Amiculucestus bonasus sp. nov., a parasite of the cownose ray Rhinoptera bonasus from the Western Atlantic. The new species is assigned to Amiculucestus Jensen & Caira, 2022 based on the presence of key diagnostic features such as protandry, presence of an inverted J-shaped cirrus sac, and absence of a seminal receptacle. It can be distinguished from all four other valid species of this genus (i.e., A. calli Jensen & Caira, 2022; A. australiensis Jensen & Caira, 2022; A. herzogae Jensen & Caira, 2022; and A. penghuensis Jensen & Caira, 2022) by the width of the terminal female-mature proglottid, gravid proglottid and ovary, and the combination of other morphometric attributes, such as number of testes, width of the terminal male-mature proglottid and posterior-most immature proglottid, and length of the gravid strobila and ovarian lobe. Phylogenetic analyses of the D1-D3 region of the 28S rDNA gene provide molecular evidence supporting its status as a new species of Amiculucestus. Amiculucestus bonasus sp. nov. is the fifth valid species of this genus and the first identified in the Southwestern Atlantic.

New species: Calicotyle carmenae
Abstract:

A new species of Calicotyle (Monogenea: Monocotylidae) is described from three deepwater catshark species (Elasmobranchii: Pentanchidae) collected off Iceland. Calicotyle carmenae n. sp. is diagnosed as a species of Calicotyle possessing a haptor with one central and seven peripheral loculi, two hamuli, and several hooklets. It is distinguished from all congeners by the absence of eye spots, having a once-looped male copulatory organ, two U-shaped vaginae, and intercaecal vaginal pores. A molecular phylogenetic analysis based on 28S ribosomal DNA sequences placed Calicotyle carmenae n. sp. within a clade of other Calicotyle species infecting selachians and holocephalans, while revealing clear genetic divergence from these congeners (8.2-11.1%; 74-99 bp). In addition, the morphology and host specificity of C. carmenae and its congeners are discussed. Some inconsistencies and insufficiently described anatomical features in other species of the subfamily Calicotylinae are highlighted, which evidence a need for a revision of this taxon. The study also provides the first record of a species of Calicotyle from pentanchid sharks, highlighting the potential for further discoveries as research expands into different hosts and deeper, underexplored marine ecosystems.

Some of the ocean’s fastest and most fearsome predators—like great white sharks and tuna—are running hotter than expected, and it’s costing them dearly. New research shows these warm-bodied fish burn nearly four times more energy than cold-blooded species, forcing them to eat more while also struggling to shed excess heat. As oceans warm, this creates a dangerous “double jeopardy”: rising temperatures push them closer to overheating, while shrinking food supplies make survival even harder.

More diving activity, fewer reef sharks on Caribbean reefs

Reef sharks (picture above taken by Melanie Meijer Zu Schlochtern) are observed less frequently on Caribbean reefs with high levels of diving activity and greater coastal development. This is shown by new research published in Journal of Applied Ecology. Even recreational activities that are often considered low impact are associated with fewer sharks on these reefs. Reef sharks play an important role in maintaining healthy reefs by helping to keep the ecosystem in balance.
